Two goals in either half were enough to give Wisbech the win in a game the Dragons feel they should have done more to make life more difficult for the opposition, but instead contrived to make life more difficult for themselves with some key errors.
It started in just such a fashion; Brewer out on the left touchline got caught out trying to step in front of his man but instead found himself the wrong side of the ball as his marker streaked away to put in a cross deflected past Portlock to give Wiz the lead within 2 minutes.
That seemed to uncharacteristically knock the wind out of the home team's sails and not even James Watkins, getting the smallest of deflections on a Ryan Matthews short corner to level the scores, seemed able to re-energise them. Wisbech converted a short corner of their own to retake the lead going into half time, but only after Edward Moisey narrowly missed out on giving the Dragons the lead (think Gazza '96, no not that one, the semi final...)
A couple of tactical reshuffles from both sides showed how finely poised the game was and as ever at 2-1, the next goal was huge. Wisbech took it, and with it effectively the game. Wisbech will say it was the culmination of a period of good passing and movement, the Dragons will say slack marking. In truth, a bit of both!
A 4th goal gave the scoreline a more comfortable look after a 16 yard hit out was intercepted at the top of the D, leaving Portlock with no chance.
The Dragons have played better and will feel frustrated that they allowed their level to drop against an opposition they felt capable of matching.
The learning curve continues..... ?
