BDHC @ Cambs Nomads
Undone early through a tactical mis-step, this was “one of those games”. In a season such as this one, this won’t be the last, but it was certainly the first. The first time that, no matter what the scoreline, as a team, as individuals, the Dragons were poor from the first whistle.
An uncharacteristically lack lustre start allowed Nomads to simply steam roller the opening exchanges, bravely committing players forward in numbers and effectively playing with just 2 defenders. This tactical gamble paid immediate dividends, the Dragons simply could not organise themselves quick enough to cope with the overloads all over the pitch. They were 2-0 down by the time a tactical reshuffle came, but by then the high ground had already been conceded and it was an uphill struggle just to get back in the game. No complaints about the work rate, players ran themselves into the ground trying to hunt down their illusive quarry, but Nomads had out thought them, out manoeuvred them, and constantly found they had an extra man free as the Dragons were reduced to chasing shadows.
Half time came as a mercy, and with it a 5 goal deficit. Mentally the Dragons had to treat the second half as a completely separate game. Another tactical change saw them push more players forward to stem the tide. The leaks seemed to be plugged, but the dam had already burst. In this team hard work is the expectation rather than something to be praised, but as the thermometer hit 19 degrees, and despite some heavy legs, the Dragons showed that although they may lose games in this division by being outplayed, they won’t allow themselves to lose by being out worked.
A further 2 goals for Nomads deprived them of a 2nd half “draw” their attitude deserved, but this was a timely reminder that although you cannot win the game in the first half, you can certainly go a long way towards losing it if you don’t start right.
Returning players will boost the squad for next week, though the young debutants who stepped up did not look out of place and will make selection interesting going forwards.

Edward Moisey - Solid debut from the youngster
