BDHC @ Wisbech
A confident start saw the Dragons settle into a quick pace early on, passing the ball neatly through the lines and transferring around the back to good effect.
Playing on the counter attack they created chances and took the lead through the returning Tom Everton, but were unable to hang onto the lead for long. As Wisbech stepped up a gear, only a fantastic goal line clearance from Ewan Howitt kept the Dragons in the lead, and soon after, a calamitous 2 minutes saw Wisbech equalise when the ball was only half cleared and broke for a simple tap in. They then took the lead almost from the restart with a brilliant counter attacking move, simple passing triangles exploited an attacking overload and the ‘keeper was left with no chance.
By now Wisbech were scenting blood and had started to press with more intensity than in the early stages of the match. Under pressure the ball was turned over from a 16 in the Dragons’ own 25, and Wisbech took a 2 goal lead.
In what was a hard fought but good natured game, the only controversy came when a Wisbech player bladed the ball through the centre of the pitch, landing to a forward player lurking beyond the back line who rounded Langley to score. Team manager Andy Briault’s protests were rewarded with a talking to by the umpire, who upon consultation with his colleague at the other end agreed the through-ball was illegal and the goal was duly chalked off. However a 4th did come before half time which saw the Dragons in need of the break to re-group.
The response was positive, good attacking play leading to a succession of short corners, one of which was eventually converted by Ben Brittain. However at the other end, problems in clearing the ball, and some tired decisions saw the Dragons unable to retain the ball long enough to mount any serious pressure. With tired defenders dropping ever deeper, Wisbech won a flurry of short corners, adding 2 more goals to take the final score to 6-2.
