After the previous weekends defeat away to Ipswich- East Suffolk the Dragons were looking to show some bouncebackability and return to winning ways by welcoming bottom of the table Ely City HC to the Arthur Mellows Astro. Ely have been without a win so fa

After winning the toss and electing for the ball to start, the Dragon’s skipper saw his side come flying out of the blocks with the midfield dominating the majority of the play. Neat work by Ben slack at the top supporting the forwards saw plenty of opportunities to test the Ely defence early and create the early chances. Penalty corners came and went for the home side but were unable to penetrate the visiting keeper who made some strong saves, including one that saw the ball stick under the inside of his kicker. Eventually the deadlock was broken after Shane Carlton was brought down in the D by the keepers flailing stick leaving the umpire no choice but to award a penalty stroke. Once again Ben Slack undertook the penalty taking duties and fired the Dragons into the lead with a well executed stroke. The dragons kept the pressure on Ely and continued to dominate in the midfield. Soon after the first goal, Slack was given plenty of space to operate by the visiting defence and was soon driving into the D to slot the home sides 2nd of the day into the bottom corner.

Half time – BDHC 2 – 0 Ely HC

As the game restarted for the 2nd period the home team were not going to let Ely get back into the game and continued to assert themselves on the game. Continuing to pressure the visiting defence and winning more penalty corners, eventually one penalty corner made its way into the goal via a deflection from Henry Winfield-Chislett. The visiting keeper continued to have a busy afternoon as Bourne Deeping continued exerting pressure on the Ely back line. The scoring was finally rounded off when Shane Carlton was awarded with an easy tap in at the far post after his tireless running throughout the day, after Andrew Kind had saw off the visiting keeper and selflessly passed to the Dragons’ striker for his first of the campaign.

Final score – BDHC 4 – 0 Ely HC

This week’s winner of the silver wand for man of the match was Ben Slack, for his two goals and his dominating performance at the heart of the Bourne Deeping Midfield.

The wand of the week was Richard Collins for yet again forgetting to bring the silver wand with him yet again!

The Dragons are currently 4th on the east men’s league Div 1 ladder but only trail the league leaders by 3 points. Next outing is an away game back down the M1 to West Herts, where the Dragons will be looking to continue their charge up the leagues.
