Still reeling slightly from last week’s thrashing by league leaders Letchworth, Bourne Deeping 1st XI welcomed Cambridge University’s 2nd XI to Glinton on Saturday with hopes of causing an upset.
The students had the lion’s share of possession in the opening exchanges as their hosts worked hard to stifle their well organised attacking structures. Despite this being largely successful, the away side did take the lead halfway through the second half when a ricochet in the D allowed a midfielder to arrive late into the D and slot calmly into the bottom corner.
This did not open the floodgates and Bourne Deeping had chances of their own as half-time approached.
Just 1-0 down at half-time, the home team could sniff an opportunity to take something from the game and a clear plan was put in place. Sadly, two defensive errors in the first five minutes after the restart scuppered these plans and the students found themselves 3-0 up.
Despite a long period of pressure later in the half, Bourne Deeping could not find a breakthrough and Cambridge added one more goal to their tally with a well executed short corner late in the game.
