A much improved performance saw Bourne Deeping 1st XI pick up their second win of the season on Saturday, winning 3-1 at fellow strugglers Upminster.
They travelled south in good spirits, as shown by coach Simon Shorter accurately predicting the scoreline prior to pushback. A slightly lethargic warm-up led to an equally lethargic start to the game and old failings threatened to take over as arguments between teammates broke out. A sloppy opening ten minutes was costly; Upminster won three successive short corners and duly dispatched the third, drag flicking through Stuart Biggs on the post for the opening goal.
Biggs soon redeemed himself, drag flicking low to the keeper’s right from a short corner to ensure that the scores were level at half-time.
In a surprising turn of events, Bourne Deeping took their energetic, incisive play into the second half and always looked the more likely to score.
This they did, midway through the half, when Biggs again flicked past the keeper from a short corner.
Rather than retreat into their shells and allow the one goal lead to become nervy, they pushed on and scored a quick third. A neat one-two down the right from Shorter and Joe Youngs created space before two more passes led to Will Cook striking across goal to give Ben Brittain a tap-in.
Try as they might, Upminster could not find a way back into the game as Bourne Deeping marked and tackled effectively until the final whistle.
For the second time this season, the Dragons find themselves at a potential turning point; this time, they must take advantage against another team low in the table when they face Waltham Forest at home next week.
