9 goal thriller

As the dust settles on another thrilling game for the men's 1st team, one thing is certain, this team are fun to watch!! A massive positive is how they started the game; 1-0 up in the first 5 minutes when Chris Burden and Angus Macbeth combined to convert the first penalty corner of the game before St Neots had even managed an attack. Some contentious decisions led to cards from the umpires but it was during a period of being short handed that Joseph Moisey doubled the away team's lead. The Dragons were making hard work of it, but they were digging in and scrapping hard.
A 2-0 half time lead was soon extended to 3 when Thomas Fowkes scored, and when Alex Hutton made it 4-0 the game looked to be over.
However, then the real carnage began as Bourne Deeping managed to concede 5 goals in 20 minutes as the match simply spiralled away from them. The first was a well taken breakaway which threw them a lifeline, and from then on the St Neots tactic was simple. Hit them hard and direct, get the defence facing their own goal and when you're 4-1 down with nothing to lose, sometimes that makes life awfully simple. Bourne Deeping on the other hand seemed caught in 2 minds, not sure whether to stick or twist. A penalty corner made it 4-2 and at 4-3 a switch to a back 4 should have given them the extra solidity to see the game out, but St Neots were on a roll and sensing a monumental turn around. A hotly disputed penalty flick gave them a 4-4 scoreline and all the momentum going forward. And then the icing on the cake, an own goal from a baseline cut back defecting in off a defender's stick. There was still time for late drama and more cards; Thomas Fowkes looked to have grabbed a 5th for Bourne Deeping but his shot was well saved off the line, and in the closing minute and a half the Dragons were awarded a penalty corner after Andrew Kind's industrious charge into the D was spectacularly halted by a St Neots body check, but they failed to convert that final chance and will now have to look to St Ives next week to right the wrongs of this hard to take defeat.
