A 6-1 final scoreline may paint a very one sided picture but that’s not a fair reflection on the performance of the home side who at halftime were trailing 3-1 and arguably could have been nursing a lead themselves having created several clear chances in the early stages before succumbing to 2 short corner strikes from Josh Fyson.
Bolstered by the returning Josh Baker, Sutton always looked capable of creating problems, and got their first shot on target in the opening minute, albeit from an optimistic strike from on the baseline which Portlock nonchalantly turned aside for a corner.
In truth Portlock was not called upon as often as Sutton would have liked throughout the whole of the first half as Sutton were forced wide, and penalty corners aside were restricted to shooting from acute angles.
A Chris Burden penalty corner high to the ‘keeper’s right on the very stroke of halftime got the Dragons back in touch at 3-1, but Sutton stepped it up a gear in the second half. Bourne Deeping played well, but lacked that aggressive energy they can usually be counted on to bring to any game, and after a couple of sloppy errors were ruthlessly punished, found themselves with a mountain to climb, whilst a couple of late goals put the icing on the cake for a well deserved victory for Long Sutton who look to maintain their charge towards the promotion places.
