BDHC v CoP3
A tetchy game lacking in real quality but full of fight and will to win. Peterborough started the better side with lots of possession but unable to capitalise. Bourne Deeping took the lead after great work from Alex Hutton won a penalty corner and Angus of The Scottish Play flicked low and hard, striking a defender on the line. Joseph Moisey stayed cool in the heat to put his side ahead from the penalty spot.
Peterborough hit back after a defensive giveaway from their own 16, but a great run by the always energetic Hugo Brill was halted in the D when he was upended by the goalkeeper. Another flick, same result, as Moisey restored the Dragons’ lead.
The second half was more Peterborough pressure as the Dragons saw off 9 penalty corners, 8 of those in just one 20 minute period. In between all the defensive melee, Thomas Fowkes set off on a mazy run of his own making, showing great 3D skills to get into the D and almost to the byline before cutting it back to Moisey who’s eyes must have lit up for his hat trick tap in! As Moisey wound up, the ball ricoched off not one but two Peterborough defenders before barely grazing the back board, giving Fowkes his first goal for the men’s 1s.
More Peterborough pressure followed, more penalty corners, with a couple of green cards thrown in just for fun, but despite not being at their best, the Dragons managed to hang on for an opening day 3-1 win.
MOTM Joseph Moisey. Calmness personified taking 2 penalty flicks under pressure.
