Game of Thrones had the Battle of the Bastards, The Hobbit had the Battle of the Five Armies... But this week Glinton played host to the epic Battle for 3rd place in Div2NW.
Peterborough were first to bring a save from either goalie, but Portlock ably backed by Brewer, Briault and Gray withstood the opening barrage.
Alex Hutton had the ball in the net after just 7 minutes but it was ruled out, though the Dragons did get a penalty corner from it which Hugo Brill flicked high into the top left corner for 1-0.
Just 4 minutes later the Edlington Express sped through the CoP defence to make it 2-0 and when Ben Brittains shot somehow squirmed through the keepers pads for 3-0, Peterborough had a mountain to climb.
Briault blocked a shot on the line with his leg and Dragons hearts were in their mouths for a moment as the penalty flick was given, but Portlock made the save look easy.
They did switch off momentarily and allowed Peterborough to pull one back for 3-1, and for a few minutes the game was evenly poised.
There was time for some minor drama as a Peterborough player slipped over, bundling over Callum in the process before appearing to try and "snowplough" through the prone Howitt for some unknown reason. Brewer and Allen were quickly on scene to diffuse any tension before the pink headbanded hero strode in to give everyone a thorough telling off.
A 3-1 halftime score meant Peterborough had to score a further 6 goals to snatch that all important bronze medal position. Robin smashed home a penalty corner to make their job even harder and Ben tapped home the rebound from an Isaac Charles shot which was simply too hot for any goalkeeper to handle. 5-1 and surely game over... Well, yes it was. No further goals in the game but whereas other sides would have thrown in the towel, CoP continued to fight and scrap, with any lingering ideas of a second half procession of showboating from the Dragons well and truly dismissed. Ady saved one with his face. Brewer blocked one with a side tackle which should have been a flick, and Briault saved another off the line.
5-1 and home for curry and medals.
MOTM Ben Brittain.
