BDHC (4) @ Cambridge City 4s (2)
Two goals early in the first half looked to have set the Dragons on course for an easy victory. Hugo Brill opened the scoring with a drag flick, and when Andrew Kind manoeuvred himself enough space to blast in the second, the Dragons slipped into cruise control.
Unfortunately, they were then guilty of being very much asleep at the wheel as non-existent marking saw them reduced to chasing the ball in a painful 10 minute spell in which City’s veterans were allowed to pick their passes at will. City grabbed a foothold in the game with a drag flick of their own from a penalty corner, and equalised when again, poor marking and a reluctance to attack the ball saw the ball in the Dragons goal for 2-2.
To their credit, the Dragons then refocused and suddenly passes were going to sticks and the marking was tight again. Man of the match Hugo Brill struck again with an exquisite lob over the keeper to make it 3-2 going into halftime and the Dragons suddenly found their game again.
Chances came at both ends. No one quite knows how Alex Hutton and Joe Garner contrived to miss from a yard out, ditto James Watkins and Edward Moisey before the latter pair combined for Moisey to tap in the Dragons’ 4th after a great run across the goalkeeper. Youngster James Riseborough almost capped an impressive debut with a goal but was denied by a good save from the goalkeeper as Bourne Deeping began to dominate.
City had chances in a late flurry, but were resolutely repelled despite Callum Howitt and Edward Moisey receiving green and yellow cards respectively.
A great team display showing character and determination against a City side who have enough about them to catch a few teams off guard this season.
