A late pushback at Bretton Gate under the lights on Bonfire Night with fireworks illuminating the warm up.... Light the touch paper and stand well back....
To come away with 3 points from The Gate is always an achievement, it may have been Peterbrough’s 4th XI but such is the depth of talent at the club, a win is always hard earned.
What will have pleased Bourne Deeping most is the manner of the win. An excellent first half in which they controlled large portions of the half, and a more backs to the wall second half performance demonstrating the grit and determination to dig in to hold a lead.
The first half saw them pass the ball crisply, carry the ball intelligently, and tackle aggressively. Both sides had good chances, both goal keepers made good saves, but Alex Hutton’s bobbly reverse stick effort somehow looped over the Peterborough goalkeeper to see the Dragons into halftime with their noses just in front.
However, Peterborough responded well after the break. Just as last week the midfield found themselves defending much deeper than they would like and Peterborough built pressure with a succession of penalty corners they were unable to convert, in the main down to the heroics of man of the match Andy Briault who thwarted the Peterborough short corner set up with not one but four goal line clearances.
Robin Edlington released some of the pressure with a second goal for the visitors, and for a while Bourne Deeping were back on top. But Peterborough threw caution to the wind and attacked en masse. A penalty corner strike finally found its way into the net, a wayward strike from Neil Lake sailing well wide until deflected into his own net by a hapless defender.
If nothing else it set up a nail biting final ten minutes as Bourne Deeping held their nerve and their discipline to take an important 3 points.
Man of the match: Andy Briault
