With two regular players injured, this was a new look 5th team who once again demonstrated clear improvement despite going down 2 -0 to two well taken first half penalty corners by St Neots. Again The Dragons’ youth policy demonstrated clear successes, bringing in further excellent performances.
With a change in format The Dragons took a little time to settle in but strong attacking down the right through Kevin Baker linking well with the talented Ewan Johnson put St Neots under pressure. St Neots however also proved strong in attack and especially in set pieces, scoring twice through penalty corners in the space of ten minutes.
The Dragons played themselves back in to keep pressure on St Neots with confident play down the left through Will Portlock and James Gray, who again showed his flexibility in positions.
The second half pressure lead to a penalty for The Dragons when a goal bound shot was unintentionally stopped by a St Neots’ defender’s foot on the line. Sadly a fine save by their keeper prevented The Dragons pulling one back.
Further incident occurred in the second half with a fortunately unserious head injury to Lewis Gray just as he starting to make his mark but resulting in a forced exit from the game and then a more bizarre head injury to Nick Teesdale who was off the pitch at the time.
Sadly despite further pressure, often through Steve Knipe playing an unusual but successful forward role could not break down the St Neots’ defence who must have been relieved by the final whistle. Overall a very fine and positive finish at the Christmas break for the 5ths.
