An early goal for the Dragons though Richard Gray after a fine jinking run by Elliot Bates was what divided these two teams but after injuries to two of the senior players, it was a game that once again depended on the 5th team youngsters.
After a strong start, going 1-0 up in ten minutes it looked to be all going The Dragons’ way but Cambridge South played themselves back into the game and once again fine saves from keeper Joe Ashby were required to keep the lead. Poor passing by The Dragons lead to some of their difficulties.
Youngster Will Portlock, in only his second game proved a dynamo in midfield and linked well with forward Lewis Gray who was unlucky not to score. Versatility player James Gray came into his own, especially when injuries forced changes within the 5th team set up.
In the second half, Cambridge South became more difficult to contain and too often the ball was cleared by The Dragons to come straight back at them. Firm defensive play however held out, although there was certainly a great relief when the final whistle went.
A tough performance against an improved but considerate opposition enabled Bourne Deeping to maintain the one goal victory.
