A warm start saw the 5ths travel to St Neots and demonstrate a spirited performance against St Neots. A match that was very even for much of the game eventually went St Neots’ way as The Dragons struggled in the heat with no subs for relief whilst their opponents used there’s regularly for support.
The first half was played at a high pace and although finishing 0-0, either team could have scored with The Dragons having a shot cleared of the line. Superb attacking play was demonstrated especially by Kevin Baker and Charlie Butler down the right which put St Neots under a great deal of pressure.
The second half sadly started with a quickly taken chance for St Neots after an attacking move by The Dragons broke down. However a superbly taken equaliser quickly followed through Richard Gray, who adapted well to his unusual position in midfield.
Further attacking moves followed for both sides led by Tim Kiesel for The Dragons, a welcome return but dogged defensive work by James Gray and Paul Mathews at penalty corners in particular kept the match open. This was not enough and despite work by Lewis Gray to put pressure on the St Neots’ goal, fatigue in the Bourne Deeping team became clearer, while The Saints were able to capitalise with two late goals to clinch the match.
