Age and hamstrings nearly win the match!

After a chastening experience in the depths of the fen the week before BD 4's set about their task with renewed resolve as the clouds cleared and the sun dazzled on the Stamford Astro. The promise of plenty of subs (always a crucial attraction for these warriors in the twilight of their careers) quickly evaporated as Paul Curtis hobbled across to the pitch with a tweaked hammy having been to training earlier in the week, schoolboy error and slightly irresponsible I think. Swilly also claimed to be really tired having had to blow a whistle for a bit....really!

The game started brightly for BD, ably marshalled at the back by the returning Libero Baker who had decided to give Spalding a miss last week to be at one with nature in the New Forest... with age comes wisdom. The structure and cohesion of the defensive work was much improved and at times the team play allowed the ball to do most of the work. This created several promising moments which eventually was suitably rewarded, Chorlton was found on the left flank with a probing ball from Baker, he quickly found the threat of Vartan with an inch perfect 30 yard pass and the ball was duly dispatched. It wasn’t flattering for BD to double their lead as young Rob Monaghan capped a fine midfield performance calmly slotting home from short corner rebound. It was unfortunate to concede to a strong Cambs attack through the middle and perhaps, considering the cumulative decades of experience in the BD legs we needed the halftime score line to be a bit more reflective of our first half dominance.
Hamstringitis struck again during the interval as Vartan eyed up an early bath and the rugby, the enforced removal of the talismanic striker caused a defensive rejig and the 4's had to take on a more pragmatic conservative shape to deal with the growing Cambs menace. Evison and Goode battled manfully to hang on to control of the centre ground but as the half wore on it became more of a struggle as hammies, quads, and many other bits tightened. A series of hard won short corners could have provided relief for the home side however it was to be Cambs who rescued a point with a strongly struck short corner right on the final whistle.

Boris obviously recognises the toll that the last couple of weeks has taken on the tired limbs of our many quinquagenarians and might have given us a month off to let everything regenerate, and the lesson to learn from this week is how dangerous it is for senior citizens to go training, stay home, protect the hammies, save the dugout!
