Cambs South invitational squad were too strong
M3 v cambs south 5's (officially 4s) ... probably 3s
For the final match up Bourne Deeping faced cambs south, the club with this year's wildcard to play in whichever league they want.
A broadly unfamiliar visiting outfit to their home team who shared the points earlier in the season, the reality is that Bourne Deeping mens 3rds dropped short of the performance they had hoped for or required in order to win and gain promotion.
Had Josh Kenny not been in fine form it could have been worse at half time, although 2 of the goals conceded - 1 unsighted and 1 a fairly weak attempt as our GK had gone for a half-lap of the D - are best not revisited. Had the home team been awarded a flick when Paul Byrne was upended while only 2 down, then it could have made South wobble but ut wasn't to be. There were of course moments of quality, rameez took a rare attacking opportunity picked his pass, but the finish went wide. However the visitors were hungrier, more physical and forced Bourne Deeping into turnover errors and failed to work the ball back through the centre field.
On balance the 3rd team have had another great season, other than a couple of blips away at wisbech and spalding. Coming in 3rd may, on reflection, be the best result for the club balance for next season. The silver lining on the 5.0 loss in this final match is that we will hopefully avoid a trip to St Neots.
