The next part of our Umpire Stories campaign, another one of our Young Umpires shares their story. This time it's Bourne Deeping HC's Rose Taylor-Jackson:
My umpiring story. I started umpiring 3 years ago at the age of 12 because I saw how fun it looked as I played in the Lincolnshire Mini Leagues. I was given the chance to try it out after I got in touch with Eliot who has helped me throughout the whole process, and he along with the other coaches are still supporting me now. At the beginning, I started off umpiring the U12 Mini Leagues on my Sundays, as I still played in the U14s. I thoroughly enjoyed this and wanted to start doing more umpiring as I quickly developed a passion for it. With some excellent coaching I became more confident and my umpiring began to develop so I could try progressing to do the U14s of which the players were older than me at the time! But, the Umpire Support team ensured I did not feel intimidated. This was great fun and allowed me to really discover a passion for it. After a year of doing these, and building my confidence and experience, meant that I could start umpiring more advanced tournaments such as the U15 & U17 Academy Centres, which was the first taste I had of 11 a side hockey. This furthered my ability as an Umpire and as soon as I was old enough, last year, I took the Level 1 Umpires Course. I wanted to do this as I had discovered a new passion for umpiring and wanted to continue doing it so I could give back to my club by enabling Junior players to play in the Mini Leagues and Senior players to play on a Saturday, starting my Umpire Pathway. I’ve now been to the East In2Hockey Tournament two years running, travelled overseas to Wattignies HC, and was selected to go to the National In2Hockey Finals where I received the opportunity to umpire the 1st / 2nd place final! These opportunities have been excellent and very enjoyable and it has developed my skills as an umpire to the point that this last League season I was taking Ladies Division 2 & Mens Division 5 appointments. From a Young age hockey had always been my passion but now since becoming an umpire it made me realise that I love to do both! Becoming an umpire does not mean you have to give up on hockey as you can balance both! It is an excellent opportunity for all to do as it is helping me out in life with the many skills I have learnt. I hope to be able to, in the upcoming seasons, progress on to higher level games and offer more back to my Club and County, and where possible go as far as I can. Starting with the U15 / U17 Performance Centres in a few weeks time!
